Community Outreach

Mission Link Ministries: Since 2003, the staff has traveled to Bungoma in Western Kenya to assist and encourage Pastor Edwin Wanyama, the Director of Mission Link Ministries. Mission Link plants churches throughout Western Kenya, trains pastors, and operates Rehema Academy, a local orphanage and school. The Brackenhurst staff spend a week living in the homes of local families, getting to experience their food, way of living, and everyday life. During the days they travel around to local churches, speaking and encouraging the church. They have also spent time at the orphanage, playing with the children and encouraging the staff and teachers. During the summer of 2005, a group came from the States to specifically serve with Mission Link Ministries. They spent most of their time at Rehema Academy, teaching the children and encouraging the staff. They also visited and spoke at local churches.

Limuru Children's Center: Located near Brackenhurst Conference Center, Limuru Children’s Center operates an orphanage and school. Seventeen children, some with HIV or AIDS, have come from different parts of Kenya to live at the center.  Daily, more children come from the surrounding villages to attend school.  The center is run by an enthusiastic staff that cares for the children’s needs and education.  Several Brackenhurst team members have volunteered their time to teach, play with and love on the children. They have also organized groups from the States to come and volunteer at the center, bringing with them resources such as clothing and school supplies. Volunteers have also helped by building new facilities and hosting Vacation Bible School for the kids.
Brackenhurst Staff Kid's Camp: Since 2002, the Brackenhurst Ministries team has hosted an annual two-day camp for the children of Brackenhurst International Conference Center employees. The kids participate in activities that include rock climbing, different sports instruction, arts and crafts, group games, learning new songs and Bible study. The kids have a blast, and it gives the Brackenhurst Ministries staff a chance to build relationships with the parents and children that live in the same community with them.

Courtney at Medical Clinic Community Health: Several Brackenhurst team members have been interested in community health issues. They have help set-up and run local health clinics and organized medical teams from the US to treat patients. They have also been involved with Kenya Baptist Theological College, teaching a class on human health and surveying the students on health issues in their villages. With the survey, they hope to pinpoint certain health issues dealt with in the villages. Brackenhurst team members hope to train the pastors and provide them with literature that will help the overall health of their people.
Kibera Slums School Kibera Outreach: Kibera is the largest slum in Kenya, possibly all of Africa. Located in a 3 square mile part of southwest Nairobi, Kibera is home to between 600,000 to 1 million plus people. It is estimated that 50% of the people living in Kibera have HIV or the AIDS virus. The Brackenhurst staff has conducted limited visits to Kibera, meeting with AIDS support groups, visiting schools to encourage kids to get an education, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They hope to plan future visits to support that area of Nairobi.
