Western Project - Feeding Projects
Cows For Christ
Jane is the founder of the Cows for Christ program. Her husband died in 2005, leaving her with 4 young girls. Her girls were slowly starving. Edwin suggested that we purchase a milk cow so that Jane could feed her girls. The pastors in this community were so encouraged that they began praying for a milk cow for their family as well. By providing a milk cow for a needy family, we are able to bless the family as well as their neighbors. The cow also provides milk for an additional 8-9 families. By donating $500 to purchase a cow, you can provide milk for up to 50 people each day. Every other calf born to the cows is given back into the program, enabling the program to sustain itself as well as continue to grow and provide more cows for poor families.
Sustainable Feeding Projects
In addition to Cows for Christ, we are involved in several other sustainable feeding projects in the Western Province. A small chicken coup is up and running at the orphanage, providing eggs for the children. As funding allows and as we monitor the success of the pilot coup, we would like to start additional chicken coups at each of the ECD (Early Childhood Development) Centers to provide eggs for the ECD children. The coup will also provide a source of income to provide for the other food needs of the ECD children. The goal is to provide one successful coup at each ECD so that the ECD can sustain itself. We need to build 19 more coups to reach this goal, each coup costs $1150.
Lord willing, we would like to buy 15 acres to grow corn which will help feed the orphans. Farming is also a beneficial skill to equip the orphans with so that they can take care of themselves once they leave the orphanage. The final feeding project we have going is drilling boreholes so that the orphanage and villages can have clean water. To date, 3 boreholes are providing clean drinking water. As we build boreholes, we would like to see the local church become the center of the community by hosting a borehole.
Famine Relief
For many people in the area churches and for the orphans, the need for food is an urgent need. As we develop projects that will sustain them down the road, we also realize that we need to take care of their current needs as well. The rains have failed in much of Kenya, causing the price of maize (their staple food) to double. Therefore many people are in urgent need of relief food. As funding allows, we will continue to provide food to meet this desperate need.
